Awakening begins when a man realizes that he is going nowhere and does not know where to go.
Self-observation brings man to the realization of the necessity of self-change. And in observing himself a man notices that self-observation itself brings about certain changes in his inner processes. He begins to understand that self-observation is an instrument of self-change, a means of awakening.
"Take the understanding of the East and the knowledge of the West-and then seek."
The evolution of man is the evolution of his consciousness, and 'consciousness'cannot evolve unconsciously.
The Halifax Gurdjieff Group is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a forum for spiritual search based on the teaching and writings of G.I. Gurdjieff and his pupils. We welcome inquiries from anyone interested in the ideas and practices of this teaching know as "The Gurdjieff Work" which is undertaken by groups in many parts of the world. We are affiliated with the Gurdjieff Foundation of New York and with groups in other parts of Canada.
While engaging in traditional forms of the Work--group meetings, practical work together, meditation, music and sacred dance (known as the Movements)--we endeavour to make self-study an integral part of daily life.
